From 3 to 5 June 2007, seventeen Brazilian artists and craftspeople will show their works and products at Pulse exhibition in Earls Court, London. The objects displayed at the common stand range from traditional but extraordinary handicraft to modern design. The exhibition is supported by APEX Brasil (Agência de Promoção de Exportações e Investimentos), the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agengy and organized by the Brazilian non-governmental organisations Centro Cape, SBrasil and Central Mãos de Minas.
Brazilian design is booming. Over the last years, the demand for works and products of Brazilian artists and craftspeople has been growing strongly not only in Brazil but also abroad. Used materials include wood, soapstone, metal, paper, ceramic and textiles. The created products express an almost boundless creativity and reflect the cultural diversity of the country.
Brazilian handicraft looks back on a rich tradition, today combining originality, warmth and sensuality with economic profitability. Only 15 years ago many craftspeople still lived at or below the subsistence level. Meanwhile handicraft in Brazil has become an important economic factor. With a share of three percent of
the country's gross domestic product (GDP), it equals the country`s automotive industry by turnover. Organisations such as Centro Cape - the Centre for Further Education of Entrepreneurs - and the umbrella association of cooperatives Central Mãos de Minas are mainly responsible for this development. For many
years both organisations have been training craftspeople as well as supporting them in starting businesses and in exporting their products. Together with SBrasil, a non-profit organisation promoting humanitarian and social development, they lobby for fair and environmentally sound production and working conditions.
